Bio
Daniele de Lorenzo (1973) is an Italian artist whose practice investigates the relationship between perception, systems and the construction of visual form.
His research began in 1992 with the development of a method based on numerical sequences and colour combinations. Over time, this method evolved into a broader investigation involving computation, mathematics, sound, neuroscience and image-making.
In 2015, he developed Pitagora, a system and software that translates numerical sequences into visual structures. Rather than using computation simply as a tool for generating images, De Lorenzo uses systems, rules and constraints as a way of questioning how images are produced and perceived.
His practice includes digital works, painting, video and live performance. Across different media, his work examines the passage from data and structures to visual experience, and the role of the perceptual apparatus in determining what we see.
He lives and works in Italy.
Artist Statement
«[…] What is highest in my art, in itself, is the attitude of consciousness. The disinterested gaze upon reality — not methodical doubt, but the suspension of judgment; not the disregard of reality, but not its negation either. Through the abstraction of a numerical combination I arrive at terms (that is, the words that will become my images) which, since I have no interest in what they actually are, are useful to me for the way these objects present themselves to my disinterested gaze.» (1996)
Thirty years on from this diary note, I recognize that the problem still running through my work today was already there.
Taking images from the encyclopedia was my first “machine,” the first “software” for separating the creative process from my intention to assign meaning.
Normally we choose on the basis of what interests us; memory, expectations, and associations intervene before we have actually observed. In my work I try to shift this order, allowing something to emerge before I know what I am looking at.
I am not generating systems in order to produce images; I am using them to put the very way I look into crisis.
The system, the algorithm, the Pitagora software, and everything that emerges from it are not the subject of my work. This is not a matter of delegating creation to the machine — the point is to decenter the author in order to see.
The Pitagora system, for instance, produces possibilities that exceed my intention. When we cannot immediately classify something, our cognitive system is deprived of its automatic response. One is forced to truly look.
I do not want to destroy or eliminate any meaning — I don’t even know whether that is possible. I only want to keep it from arriving before the experience of looking.
